how mushrooms can help save the world
Last Friday was a typical evening in the downtown Los Angeles warehouse district housing the Farmlab crew. As I looked around, the orange hues of the setting sun reflected off the barren cement landscape in a strangely beautiful way and the sounds of cars in the distance were muffled by a train barreling by and helicopters whizzing overhead. Gathered under a bridge amongst these typical urban stimuli, a group of anxious Angelinos awaited a lecture curiously titled "How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World."
keep reading this article that i wrote about paul stamets for worldchanging here
and here's a picture of week 1 of my homegrown oyster mushroom experiment...thanks paul and dusty!! i can't wait until they start to fruit!

jill bliss at my house saturday!
okay, so jill bliss will not be at my house on saturday, but she'll be right around the corner at reform school for a solo show titled "forest coral, new work by jill bliss" based on her recent visit to the great barrier reef.
miss bliss is one of my very favorite artistas. she grew up on a family farm in norcal where everything was hand built or cultivated. you can view her portfolio website here. we share the love of botanicals and she also often emphasizes native plants in her art.
"Not only is she a huge inspiration to other indie artists & crafters out there, for managing to make a living doing what she loves, but we especially admire her for her dedication to reusing, recycling & using sustainable materials in ALL of her work."
see you there!

partying with purpose
i am quite behind in my posts, but i wanted to shout out to the inspiring group of people who came to the good magazine and world changing party a few weeks back in celebration of the launch of the world changing book.
i took phil (who still hasn't passed on the photos from that night...ahem) and he was so inspired that he bought 5 copies of the book for edsa offices around the world. alex steffen (executive editor) signed each copy with a few words for each office and our new friend, tomas, caught it on film. tomas is fabulous and so is his website think organic where you can view his video shorts on topics of sustainability.
i also got to catch up with the beautiful alanna, feris of greenopia, barent of greendrinks and grow-design, damien of treehuggertv and green la girl siel among others doing amazing, world changing things. except for carrying phil's 5 very heavy books back to santa monica (thank goodness for beer muscles) and my headache the next morning (the after-effects of beer muscles), i had a blast.
the book itself is beautifully designed and the message is powerful. you can find it at a local bookstore near you, or through the world changing site.

swap-o-rama-rama
"There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness." Gandhi
i can not wait for december 16th, the swap-o-rama-rama is coming to el lay!! i discovered the sorr a few months ago when i was researching re-made clothing and came across their website which featured images of not one, but two of my very dearest girlfriends! so i knew that this was something that i needed to know about!
say hello to my dear friend maryann (aka orange) who worked with me in the environmental consulting world in sacramento when i first moved to california. she introduced me to the n street co-op that eventually became my home in davis. that's the fabulous amy in the background. this photo is from the san francisco sorr.
and my sweet kristy who went through landscape architecture school with me at penn state. she is crafty beyond comprehension and a very green lady indeed. this is her sewing up her masterpiece at the brooklyn sorr.
sorr is basically a huge clothing swap and series of do-it-yourself workshops that help participants unleash their creative genius. the following is from an email that i received recently:
It's easy to move from consumer to creator! At Swap-O-Rama-Rama you'll find talented indie designers and DIY stations where you can learn traditional crafts like embroidery, beading and appliqué. These include sewing stations with sewing machines run by knowledgeable clothing and costume designers; silk screening, and decoration stations for working with beads, buttons, and a variety of accouterments. This year we'll have a team of LA's best volunteers ready to help you find a new recycled look. But of course the core of the swap is the gigantic piles of free clothing sorted into categories: pants, shirts, skirts, sweaters etc. These piles are the collective total of each guest’s contribution of one bag of unwanted clothes. Take home as much clothing as you can carry. Remainders go to Out of The Closet Thrift Stores.
so start decluttering your closet now (i already have a bag of clothes ready) and join me at the swap-o-rama-rama el lay...
december 16th, 11am to 7pm
$5 plus any size bag of unwanted clothing
$10 without clothing
once inside all of the materials for creativity and all the clothes you can carry are free
all ages welcome!

what can i do?
"it's not that easy being green
having to spend each day the color of the leaves
when I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold
or something much more colorful like that
it's not easy being green
it seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things
and people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
or stars in the sky
but green's the color of Spring
and green can be cool and friendly-like
and green can be big like an ocean, or important
like a mountain, or tall like a tree
when green is all there is to be
it could make you wonder why, but why wonder why
wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful
and I think it's what I want to be"
last night, i found myself in a room full of people with one burning question on each of our minds...what can i do today for a greener el lay?
that was the theme of the speakeasy hosted by smartgals that i attended right down the street. the evening began with holly ramos' live set and her sweet rendition of the muppets' "it's not easy being green" (lyrics above). a quiz on sustainability was given to warm up conversation, as the guest speakers for the evening: colin bogart, president of the la bike coalition, anna cummins, founder of bring your own, jose angel orozco, creator of the coffee cellar, katura reynolds of treepeople, and james roja of the mta got settled in. each of the panelists introduced themselves and their visions for a greener los angeles, and then opened up for a short q&a from the room.
the topics that were discussed were broad yet very connected. we discussed the need to reduce our disposable mentality here in los angeles (and the usa in general) that anna is tackling through her reusables campaign. anna also talked about the documentary "our synthetic sea" which inspired her through discovering the incredible effects that plastics are having on our oceans. jose talked about the importance of fair trade, organics, and shade grown in the coffee business, and why it makes a better cup of joe. colin made the point that you don't have to throw your car over a cliff and become an avid cyclist to make a difference...bicycling for your local errands instead of driving or commuting to work by bike one day a week makes a big difference, especially when a lot of people start to do it. james expressed his desire to make los angeles more of an experiential city and our need to engage ourselves in the urban fabric through walking, biking, and utilizing the public transportation system. europe, he said, is shaped by people who live in smaller apartments, use public transport, and collect experiences whereas the united states is more shaped by consumption and the collection of things. this proved to be a hot topic, and the point was made that los angeles neighborhoods (culver city for example) are creating experience locally but that the public transportation and bikeway infrastructure are not there to support it... last but not least, ketura explained that treepeople is a community service and gave many reasons why neighborhoods should utilize their community treeplantings (um, like we all need to breathe right?).
all in all, it was an evening full of great conversation and intention. it inspired me to see so many people working hard for the cause in my new community. i also got to catch up with my permaculture buddy eric from los angeles post carbon, and finally got to meet anna!

cool stuff around town
bubbles installation at m&a. i stopped by m & a last night while i was in silverlake for greendrinks and got a peak at the new bubbles installation in their courtyard. the interactive installation consists of large air-bag "bubbles" that inflate and deflate in response to visitors, expressing a continuously changing urban architectural experience. the installation is up through the end of january.
first leed platinum residence in u.s.. phil and i recently took a stroll by livinghomes' new project in santa monica which is the first u.s. residence to be awarded the highest rating possible from the u.s. green building council’s (usgbc) new pilot, leed® for homes rating system. designed by ray kappe, the livinghomes model home is a zero energy, zero water, zero waste, zero carbon, zero emissions residence. it's a beautiful architectural statement, although it does seem that they could use some landscape help - lh, call me :). livinghomes is the first company to make leed certified, prefab homes available to consumers nationwide.
sustainable works green living workshops in santa monica. sustainable works, a non-profit environmental education organization sponsored by the city of santa monica, would like to introduce a workshop designed to help families learn about important environmental issues, save valuable resources, lower utility bills, and protect their health. their next two workshop cycles begin monday, october 23rd, and wednesday, october 25th, 7:00 p.m. for more information call anna cummins at sustainable works 310.458-8716 x1

making love outta trash
OUR LOVE
installation by father daughter team
SHRINE and JESSE
10.14.06 - 11.18.06
Reception:
Saturday October 21, 2006
6:00pm to 10:00pm
my favorite moustached mischief maker...shrine, and his lovely daughter jesse have put so much heart into this show...don't miss it! our love is an installation of shrines and paintings by the duo...proving that you can make love out of trash. if you can't make the reception on saturday night, the show will be at the transport gallery through nov. 18th.
Los Angeles, CA - Transport Gallery in association with Forever's Ghost Riders present, OUR LOVE, an installation by father daughter team Shrine and Jesse Blue Spears. The exhibition will run from October 14, 2006 through November 18, 2006. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, October 21st from 6:00pm to 11:00pm.
Daughter father team, Jesse Blue Spears and Shrine combine forces to lift the veil to the other world. No mercy, full power, no holds barred paint off trash throw down. Come celebrate "our love" for you with this powerful installation.
Regarding the installation: 19 trucks full of forgotten debris collected and transformed into holy relic beauties for you to see and know the secrets of the future. Fingers with their own agenda are painting for pure joy. Transport Gallery has been dipped in special paint and on top of this special paint we hang the so-called art, we call it "Our Love". From the ceilings hang layer upon layer of exotic shrines - seeping down roots, cascading bones and wire. Crying birds will guide ye through secrets we do not understand. Now the journey has begun, constant flowing creation from; paint, trash, pom poms, wire, feathers, leaves, cardboard, glass and wood, everything falling in love over and over again.
Transport Gallery is located at 1308 Factory Place, Los Angeles CA 90013. The gallery is open by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please call 310-956-5344. To learn more about the gallery and its past exhibitions, please visit the website.

party people!!
decompressing from decompression here on a lovely sunday afternoon. it was great seeing everyone's glowing faces yesterday and catching up on your post burn happenins. i really felt the playa magic last night while playing amongst the el lay backdrop. unfortunately, i missed the after after party as i'm still in healing mode, but i'm sure you made me proud bringing the sunrise up together.
i want to send a shout out to the decom greening group. they worked hard to offer green workshops and make sure that decom was a leave no trace event. i am proud to be a part of such a consciousness raising community. with this coming years art theme being the green man, i feel positive that we can continue to express ourselves radically, while minimizing our party footprint on the world...here's an awesome example of just that:
last night, another party kicked off in rotterdam at a new club called the critical mass. hyped as the sustainable dance club, the critical mass features organic beer on tap and fair-trade clothing on sale, but that is just the beginning. enviu, an environmental ngo for youth, is working with the architectural firm döll to create a truly sustainable nightclub featuring energy-generating dance floors (excellent way to extract kilowatts from energetic clubbers), toilets that flush with rain water, walls that change colour as a reaction to temperature changes, a rooftop garden and other elements that combine to create a sustainable clubbing environment.
enviu and döll aim to build a club that will be fun and profitable, yet will have a low impact on the environment, while raising awareness for social and environmental issues among the young and hip.
i hope that this proves wildly successful environmentally and financially...and that the concept spreads around the globe! with the way that this community parties, we could probably power most of the west coast with our dancefloors :)

in katrina's wake
chris jordan's exhibition "in katrina's wake: portraits of loss from an unnatural disaster" is showing at the paul kopeikin gallery through tomorrow, october 14th. chris is a photographer whose previous show, intolerable beauty, was an eye-opening exhibit of american mass consumption. chris hits home again through his hauntingly sad yet beautiful images in katrinas wake:
"There is evidence to suggest that Katrina was not an entirely natural event like an earthquake or tsunami. The 2005 hurricane season's extraordinary severity can be linked to global warming, which America contributes to in disproportionate measure through our extravagant consumer and industrial practices. Never before have the cumulative effects of our consumerism become so powerfully focused into a visible form, like the sun's rays narrowed through a magnifying glass. Almost 300,000 Americans lost everything they owned in the Katrina disaster. The question in my mind is whether we are all responsible in some degree."
100% of chris' proceeds from print sales of his images will be donated to gulf coast hurricane relief charities.
